As your midwife, I provide comprehensive and holistic health care throughout your pregnancy, during your labor + birth, and for you and your newborn during the first 6 weeks postpartum.  In the early stages of care, we form a relationship based on trust and informed consent, so that you can move forward feeling empowered with all your decisions surrounding childbirth.  I believe strongly in both evidence based care and intuition, and feel that both are necessary to make informed choices.

I am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and a Licensed Midwife (LM) in California.  I am a member of the Bay Area Homebirth Collective and participate in regular peer review with local midwives.  I am committed to creating safe spaces for people to birth their babies the way they want.  I am a firm believer in freedom of choice, freedom to choose how and where you birth.  I am honored to witness birth as a rite of passage – however it’s done.  I am humbled to be serving my community as a midwife.

Choosing home birth by Aviva Romm MD

Prenatal Care

During your prenatal care we meet every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks from 28-36 weeks, and weekly from 36 weeks until birth.  Our first meeting is about 2 hours and covers an initial health biography, social and emotional history, any necessary lab work and a nutritional assessment.  I provide lifestyle, nutritional and supplemental recommendations as needed.  Our meetings include education surrounding pregnancy and birth, a full evaluation of both you and your baby at each visit, and plenty of time to answer questions.  Our meetings last about 1 hour and are done either in the comfort of your home or at my Berkeley office.  Throughout your pregnancy I am available by phone or email.

Labor + Birth

I begin to be on-call for you from 37 weeks of pregnancy until the birth of your baby.  You call me when you feel your labor has begun, and I come to your home during your labor to provide an initial labor assessment of you and your baby.  I will continue to monitor the well-being of both of you throughout your labor and birth.  As birth approaches, I call in a second midwife to assist me, whom you’ve had a chance to meet ahead of time.  After the birth, I stay with you for 3-4 hours.  During this time I will do a full newborn exam and assist you in establishing breastfeeding.

Your postpartum care includes home visits at 1 day, 3 days, 5-7 days, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks.  During these visits I provide comprehensive care for both you and your newborn which includes; wellness assessments, breastfeeding support, support for the transition to parenting, lab tests as necessary, birth control counseling as requested, and referrals to your pediatrician if needed.  I continue to be available to you by phone or email for questions or concerns that should arise during this time.
